Agencies to give life insurance to working Texas families

Texas families needing life insurance may be able to get a free policy through a joint effort by Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, Spectrum Financial Group and Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co.

The three organizations will give away $50,000 term life insurance policies to benefit children of working families in the Dallas area.

Eligible parents and legal guardians between the ages of 19 and 42 may apply for a policy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13 at Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, 2800 N. Hampton Road.

Term life insurance pays beneficiaries if a policyholder dies during a specific period.

The $50,000 benefit from the MassMutual policies will help pay for the education of children if their parent or legal guardian dies during the 10-year policy term. MassMutual expects to issue a total of $1 billion in free coverage nationally through its philanthropic LifeBridge program.

Insurance applicants must have one or more dependent children under the age of 18 and be working full or part time, with a total gross family income of between $10,000 and $40,000.

They also must be permanent, legal residents of the U.S. and in good health, as determined by MassMutual's underwriting guidelines.

Applicants must undergo on-site medical screening by giving blood and urine samples.

Appointments are required, so those interested should call Amber Brown at Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity at 214-678-2335 to reserve a spot.

Applicants should bring a recent pay stub and a federal income tax return or W-2 wage and tax statement.
