Who needs disability insurance? You do!

As I am preparing for the radio show airing this Sunday @ 11am on WXNT 1430 AM. I thought I would update the blog. I've been on a much needed vacation and now its time to get to work.

So you might ask if you don't already know. What is disability income insurance? Disability income insurance is protection against illness or injury that may result in loss of income for a period of time.

Who needs disbaility income insurance? The quick answer is practically everyone. Yet, most folks overlook the need for this type of coverage. Most people insure their homes, cars, and have health insurance. Why? Because they realize the cost if their house goes up in flames, their car gets in an accident, or they need to be seen by a doctor. If you rely on your income to pay your bills then you likely need Disability Insurance.

People often incorrectly believe they will be covered by Social Security, Workers' Compensation or their own savings. This simply isn't true most of the time. Although these programs can help supplement income you can't expect to recoup your income using these sources.

Social security benefits are often difficult to obtain, since their are restrictions that state, you must be completely disabled with no hope of recovery for a period of at least one year, or have a disability expected to be fatal. Ouch! Workers' compensation offers limited benefits, but only if you are injured on the job. The last resort, personal savings, is often a risky place to place your faith. A short disability can wipe out your savings in a blink of an eye.

Most Americans acknowledge the possibibilty of a disability. But, why do so few own disability insurance? Perhaps it's the fear of the unknown; they don't know how much is costs and what are the odds of becoming disabled.

Disability insurance is priced according to the elimination period, benefit period, occupational class, and benefit amount. It would be safe to say that you will pay between 1%-3% of your annual income for a quality DI plan. If you had an ATM machine in your home with available withdrawals of $50,000 per year. No PIN needed. How much would you insure that ATM for? $500?, $1,000? Get the point. You need to have a quality disability insurance plan in place.

Did you know that according to the Commissioners Disability Table that it is far more likely you will suffer a disability than be in an auto accident or have a house fire.

If the above facts don't hit home, then perhaps letting you know that of the nearly 500,000 Americans who filed for bankruptcy protection, half suffered an unexpected illness or injury and most of them had medical insurance.
